Works from a Historic Scottish Collection Featuring Chinese Paintings
We are delighted to present the exhibition, Brushes Across Empire: Works from a Historic Scottish Collection Featuring Chinese Paintings, in London this November. Join us in our Connaught Street location to view a selection of fourteen Chinese paintings from this collection.
Featuring a selection of highlights from our March 2024 auction, the exhibition celebrates the discerning eye and enduring legacy of Sir James Stewart Lockhart (1858–1937), a scholar and collector of note who worked as an official in Hong Kong from 1879, and latterly Weihaiwei from 1902 to 1921. His collection offers a rare glimpse into the more academic form of collecting in the days of the Empire.
Lyon & Turnbull is honoured to be offering part two of this widely published and exhibited collection of Chinese paintings, ceramics, and works of art in March 2026, reflecting Lockhart’s deep engagement with East Asian culture during a transformative era of exchange. The highlights will be on display at our Connaught Street location from 2–6 November 2025.
