Rugs & Carpets

Lyon & Turnbull have developed a strong reputation for the sale of Rugs & Carpets, both through our Scottish auction house in Edinburgh and via live online auctions. Our specialists are knowledgeable, not only about rugs and carpets, but also the current marketplace, an essential combination that leads to successful sales of Oriental carpets and hand-woven textiles from regions such as Turkey, the Caucasus, Tabriz and across the Middle East and Asia.

Every year we offer a wide selection of Oriental carpets, from large Turkish Ushak, Persian Zeigler and Indian Agra carpets, through fine Kashan Mohtasham and silk Hereke pieces, to sought after tribal weavings such as Caucasian Kazak and Shirvan rugs and Turkoman trappings and carpets.

Amongst the many significant sales of Oriental carpets by Lyon & Turnbull over the years, notable examples include the Holms Hepburn Coronation Carpet, a 17th century Isfahan which had been placed under the throne in Westminster Abbey for the coronations of Edward VII and George V, recently sold for £79,250. Also worthy of note is an important William Morris Hammersmith carpet, which had remained in the same family since being purchased from Morris & Co., achieving £89,800 at auction.

Our Rugs & Carpets department are always happy to offer no-obligation confidential advice to clients wondering about the value of their floor, or wall coverings. Surprising ‘discoveries’ have included a large ivory ground Zeigler which sold for £123,250, an Agra that sold for £39,300 and an overlooked early Yomut carpet which made £23,400.

Rugs and carpets are currently included in a range of auctions throughout the calendar, from dedicated sections in our antiques auctions to single-owner collections and house sales.
