How Do We Know a Meteorite Came From the Moon?
Appearance alone cannot reliably establish that a meteorite is lunar. Scientists identify lunar meteorites by studying their mineralogy, chemistry and other characteristics and comparing them with our knowledge of lunar rocks, including samples returned by lunar missions.
Many lunar meteorites are breccias, rocks composed of fragments that were broken apart and subsequently fused together by repeated impacts on the Moon’s surface. Others represent different types of lunar rock and geological processes. For the auction market, scientific classification is therefore particularly important. A specimen described as a lunar meteorite should have appropriate evidence supporting that attribution.

What Makes a Lunar Meteorite Valuable?
Lunar origin immediately places a meteorite within an unusual and scarce collecting category, but not all lunar meteorites have the same value.
Classification
Lunar meteorites are classified according to their composition and characteristics. The precise classification can help establish what part of the Moon’s geology a specimen represents and may contribute to its scientific and collecting significance. For important material, supporting classification documentation is a fundamental part of its provenance.
Size and Weight
Weight can have a significant bearing on value, particularly because lunar material is scarce. However, value should not be reduced to a simple price per gram. Classification, provenance, condition, form and the qualities of the individual specimen also need to be considered. A substantial lunar meteorite with strong provenance can occupy a very different position in the market from a small fragment of the same broad classification.
Provenance
A clear history can be particularly important for lunar meteorites. The meteorite’s recognised name or find designation, location and date of discovery, classification history and subsequent ownership may all form part of its provenance. Original labels, invoices, laboratory records and previous auction catalogues should therefore be retained.
Form and Presentation
Lunar meteorites can reach the market in several forms. Some collectors favour natural specimens that preserve the meteorite largely as it was found. Others may be drawn to cut sections or slices that reveal the internal structure of the rock.
Lunar material can also occasionally be worked into sculptural forms. The significance of such a piece depends on the underlying meteorite as well as its size, provenance and quality of workmanship.
Are Lunar Meteorites Rare?
Yes. Lunar meteorites represent only a very small proportion of meteorite material known on Earth. Their rarity is partly a consequence of the extraordinary sequence of events required to bring them here. Material must first be ejected from the Moon by an impact, escape lunar gravity, encounter Earth and then survive its passage through our atmosphere.
Confirmed lunar meteorites are therefore considerably scarcer than more commonly encountered meteorite classifications. Rarity alone, however, does not determine auction value. The classification, mass, provenance and quality of the individual specimen remain important.
Lunar Meteorites and Apollo Moon Rocks: What Is the Difference?
Lunar meteorites and rocks returned from the Moon by astronauts share a lunar origin, but their histories are very different. Lunar meteorites were naturally ejected from the Moon by impacts and subsequently fell to Earth.
Apollo lunar samples were collected during NASA’s Apollo missions and returned directly to Earth. These samples are US government property and are not ordinary objects of private trade.
This distinction matters when the phrase “Moon rock” is used commercially. A privately owned lunar meteorite may genuinely be a piece of the Moon without having any connection to the Apollo missions.
Can You Own a Piece of the Moon?
Naturally fallen lunar meteorites can be privately collected and traded where applicable laws allow. This is fundamentally different from material collected during government space missions. A lunar meteorite reaches Earth naturally and may subsequently enter private collections through legitimate recovery and sale.
As with other important meteorites, provenance is essential. Anyone considering buying or selling lunar material should understand its classification, find history and subsequent ownership.
Natural Lunar Meteorites, Slices and Worked Specimens
There is no single form in which a lunar meteorite must be collected. A natural specimen can preserve the meteorite’s external character and the form in which it was recovered. A cut surface may reveal the different minerals and fragments contained within the rock, particularly in brecciated material. Worked pieces offer another approach altogether.
