Plate volume only of Denon's highly significant work on the architecture and art of ancient Egypt. "Denon was the first to reveal the richness of Egyptian art of Europe" ' (Blackmer). Dominique Vivant, Baron Denon, artist, writer, diplomat, author and archaeologist, joined Napoleon's expedition to Egypt as part of the arts and literature section of the Institut d'Égypte. His fine engravings presented Egyptian art to a receptive audience and had a substantial impact on the decorative arts of the day. His two-volume Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte ("Journey in Lower and Upper Egypt"), 1802, is considered the foundation of modern Egyptology.
