Odessa (Ector County, Texas, USA) IAB (iron) - found 1922
Daniel Barringer - the lawyer and geologist that first recognized the origin of 'Meteor Crater' - also first recognized the Odessa Crater in the 1920s as a true meteorite crater.
In the late 1930s the crater was explored by digging and drilling, which raised concern about the preservation of such a meteorite monument from famed meteoriticist Harvey Nininger.
Later surveys have discovered several smaller craters, all associated with the Odessa meteorite event. The main crater measures around 165 meters across and is now mostly filled with deposits, leaving just a relatively shallow dish.
