Note: John Talbott Donoghue was a classicist and one of the most successful young American artists of his day. At 35 he won the gold medal at the 1880 Paris Salon for this sculpture 'The Sophocles Leading the Chorus of Victory after the Battle of Salamis'. The sculpture made his name, and, arguably, remains his greatest achievement.
