Footnote
Note: After an original marble statue created by Falconet for Louis XV's mistress Mme. de Pompadour in 1755, now in the Louvre. Falconet was appointed director of the sculpture atelier at Sevres from 1757 to 1766 and was extremely influential in creating small figural sculptures produced in unglazed white porcelian. This model, and its companion Psyche, was extremely popular in the 18th century at Sèvres and was bought by many members of the court, including Mme. de Pompadour. The first Sevres version was made in 1758.
