Note: Hereford lived in Collioure in the 1920s where he shared lodgings with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Rudolph Ilhee.
Edgar Hereford was born at Greenock in Scotland and studied at the Slade where he became a close friend of Rudolph Ihlee (1883-1963). In 1922 the pair travelled to Collioure, a Mediterranean fishing port in the south of France near the border with Spain where they painted until the outbreak of the Second World War. On their recommendation Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret based themselves in neighbouring Port Vendres. The story of their artistic exile is told in Rudolph Ihlee: The Road to Collioure by James Trollope published in 2022 by Lund Humphries. Cork Trees features cork oak trees near Collioure circa 1925.
We would like to thanks James Trollope for his assistance cataloguing this lot.
