Edgar Hereford was born at Greenock in Scotland and studied at the Slade in London where he became a close friend of Rudolph Ihlee (1883-1963). In 1922 the pair travelled to Collioure, a Mediterranean fishing port in the south of France near the border with Spain where they painted until the outbreak of the Second World War. On their recommendation Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret based themselves in neighbouring Port Vendres. The story of their artistic exile is told in Rudolph Ihlee: The Road to Collioure by James Trollope published in 2022 by Lund Humphries. A Village In The Pyrennes shows the commune of Marquixanes near Prades about an hour’s drive from Collioure circa 1925.
We would like to thank James Trollope for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
