Note: Judith Bronkhurst suggests that the fact that Hunt chose to exhibit the present work in his 1906-07 retrospective exhibitions, rather than the full-face chalk portrait executed in 1866, demonstrates its poignancy and personal significance for him as the last representation of his beloved first wife.
