Description
from Drawings made on the Spot by David Roberts R.A., with Historical Descriptions by William Brockedon, F.R.S., Lithographed by Louis Haghe. London: F. G. Moon, 1846-49. Large folio (610 x 434mm), 3 volumes, 3 hand-coloured lithographed titles and 121 finely hand-coloured tinted lithographed plates mounted on card, on original guards throughout, tissue guards, contemporary red half morocco gilt by M. Ogle & Son, Glasgow bookbinders, with their ticket, gilt edges, rubbed [Abbey, Travel, 272]
Provenance
Note: An exceptionally clean copy of the de-luxe edition with the hand-coloured plates mounted on card and the smaller plates printed separately, like the larger plates.
Although published separately, these volumes are the Egyptian and Nubian section of Roberts's great work. The other three volumes are usually referred to as Roberts's 'Holy Land'. Together, they comprise 'one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing...the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph' [Abbey, Travel, 385].
