Note: Giovanni Battista Torriglia undertook advanced painting studies in Florence. During his time there, Torriglia was focussed on religious scenes and earned various commissions to create decorative schemes for the inside of several churches in nearby towns.
From 1901, he re-located to Tuscany, and it was at this time that he started to move away from religious and historical painting and commence creating the romantic scenes of domestic, family life that he is now known for.
'At the Spinning Wheel' is a lovely example of Torriglia's ability to create charming, family scenes, with strong characterisation and a clear narrative element. His precise attention to detail is clearly apparent in the busy scene, which clearly demonstrates the tenderness between three generations of the family and their shared joy in domestic activity.
