Note: 'Figures in an Interior' is a typical work by Lesrel. The balanced interior composition with a window out to the city sets the scene for the main focus of the picture, the group of figures, which allows the artist to demonstrate his talents in the highly detailed depiction of their luxurious clothing, accessories and accoutrements. From sumptuous silks and velvets swathed across the figures and the background to sparkling silver objects and weapons, even a collection of dead game to the far left, every element of the composition contributes to the feeling of richness and excess, a tribute to Lesrel's skill and attention to detail.
Lesrel developed his particular approach from the influence of Jean Louis Ernes Meissonier (1815-1891), who had embraced a new genre of history painting that responded to a widespread interest in romanticised views of the past. Meissonier was focussed on a highly-finished style and well-researched historical detail, and Lesrel followed in his footsteps, finding a strong market for his romantic historical scenes across England, France and the U.S.A. Scenes of musicians, such as 'The Music Party' (Lot XXX) were a particular speciality of Lesrel's, as the subject lent itself so perfectly to his technical ability to depict detail and lustre.
Lesrel exhibited at the Salon regularly throughout his career, receiving an honourable mention in 1889. His work can be found in museums across the world including in the New York Public Library and the Musee de Beaux-Arts, France.
