Note:The Wheeler workshop in Arncroach was established by William Wheeler the elder in 1877, with chairs being produced from the 1880s. After his death in 1913 his son, and then grandson, both also William, carried on the business in the 20th century. These low chairs were not specifically children's chairs but intended for adults aswell. William Wheeler II claimed the term was derived from an order he received from the sister-in-law of Sir Ralph Anstruther, who asked him to make a scaled down version of a chair she owned for her fireside.
