Description
of Chippendale style, each with serpentine crest rail with shell ends, pierced splat, fluted side rails, red leather stuff-over seats with nail head edge, square legs and pierce corner brackets, H-stretcher and rear stretcher, the armchairs with scrolled arms with flower carved panels and scrolled hand holds (26)
30cm wide, 96cm high, 48cm deep
Note: The pattern on which the design of these chairs is based was first published by Thomas Chippendale in The Gentleman and Cabinetmaker's Director, 1754, pl. XIIII. It was a popular model in Ireland during the 18th and 19th centuries. An 18th century set from Malahide Castle, County Dublin was sold by Sotheby's London, 7 July 2000, lot 27. Michael Butler's firm specialised in good quality copies of fine 18th century furniture such as this set.
