Note:Charles Stiven (1753-1820) was a renowned box maker who commonly used the 'invisible hinge', thought to have been invented by John Sandy of nearby Alyth. The boxes were of sycamore, decorated in penwork and paint and heavily varnished. The town was so well known for production of this type that all such boxes were known as 'Laurencekirk boxes'. After 1821, the focus for production of this type moved to Mauchline.
Drumtochty Castle, north of Laurencekirk, was built in 1812.
