A handwritten note apparently in the artist's hand affixed verso reads:
‘I was once introduced to a rich man in a gallery who owned more than 40 of my pictures. He invited me to see them. When he showed me the pictures he said: ’I bought this one because the lion's face reminded me of my Jewish father-in-law and this one of my father' and so on. Practically all the faces of dogs and lions reminded him of all his friends and relatives. When I looked closer at them, for the first time I could see that my faces of animals could easily represent faces of people. The reason for this must be in me. I do not like to reproduce faces of animals from photographs and prefer to paint them from memory or how I think they are. They are more interesting that way. J.M.'
