Footnote
Johnnie of Braidislee is a Borders ballad which recounts the travails of a poacher who ventures to hunt the royal deer, but is caught in the act by the King's Foresters and is mortally wounded.
An inscription on the frame reads as follows:
He has set his back against an oak,
His foot against a stone.
Another shot against the Foresters
Tho' they be seven to one.
