Anderson established himself as a line engraver, but as he matured he increasingly worked in watercolour, specialising in depictions of rural life in Brittany and Holland. Wanderers, Brittany was inspired by a visit to western France in 1883, as was a companion painting by Anderson titled A Breton Beggar. Both works were exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy the following year.
