Footnote
Duffy Ayers arrived in the picturesque Essex village of Great Bardfield in 1941, where she and her artist-husband Michael Rothenstein rented Chapel Cottage from John Aldridge. This delightful still life dates to after 1955, by which point the Ayers had relocated to Bloomsbury, but the enduring influence of her Great Bardfield colleagues is clear in the painting's charming stylisation.
