Footnote
Note:
Originally designed for the Millenium Collection by Nicole Williams who was working at Hamilton & Inches at the time, the candlesticks were designed alongside a centrepiece, which comprises a central bowl on four lion rampant legs each holding a branch with a smaller bowl on a large domed circular foot.
The Millennium Collection was commissioned by the Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh, when Henry McLeish was First Minister of Scotland, to commemorate the Millenium and to celebrate the return of a Scottish Parliament after 300 years. Fifteen of Scotland's leading silversmiths were invited to design and create a piece of silver for the collection; including Malcolm Appleby, Grant McCaig, and Linda Robertson. Each piece bears the special commemorative Millennium hallmark that could only be applied between 1999 and 2000.
Now curated by the Scottish Goldsmiths Trust, the collection also celebrates the best of Scottish craftsmanship at the turn of the new millennium. It is on permanent loan to Scotland's First Minister and resides in Bute House to promote the quality of craftsmanship in Scotland today.
Hamilton & Inches went on to retail the candlesticks and centerpieces, and for this set, the gilding to the bowls of these candlesticks was a bespoke commission.
