Philip Saltmarshe, the 17th of Saltmarshe aforesaid (born 15th March 1780 died 28th November 1846). He succeeded his great uncle, Philip Saltmarshe, the 16th of Saltmarshe upon his death on the 11th April 1796.
Philip, the 17th of Saltmarshe served both as a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy Lieutenant for the East Riding of the County of Yorkshire and in his youth he was educated at Clare College, Cambridge. He married Harriet Denison (born 12th February 1788 died 17th February 1864) at the Parish Church of St. Marylebone, Marylebone in the County of Middlesex on the 10th May 1824. Harriet was the daughter of Robert Denison, of Kilnwick Percy in the County of Yorkshire and his wife, Frances Brooke.
The Saltmarshe family derived their name from the Manor of Saltmarshe. Their earliest ancestor was Geoffery de Saltmerse who was living at the end of the 12th and at the beginning of the 13th Centuries.
