James Muirhead was apprenticed to Mitchell & Russell and gained his freedom 4 September 1817 as a hammerman and watchmaker. In the Glasgow 1844-45 Post Office Directory, James Muirhead is listed as watchmaker to her Majesty, goldsmith and jeweller, 90 Buchanan Street, house, 15 Dalhousie Street. James Muirhead died 14 January 1871 leaving an extensive will. James Muirhead's mark "JM" is frequently confused with that of John Murray who died 17 April 1821
