In 1873, the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog was described as “dinas y llechi” “slate city”, as it was the largest town in the slate quarrying areas.
The quarry was originally opened in the early 1800s but was unsuccesfully developed until the mid 19th-century. The remains of the mill can still be found, and was used until the 1990s.
