The Marital Arms of Du Pré and Maxwell
Arms:
(on the dexter) Azure a chevron between in chief two mullets and in base a lion passant argent (for Du Pré)
(on the sinister) Argent a double-headed eagle sable beaked and membered gules all within a bordure of the third (for Maxwell)
Upon the balance of probability and without any evidence to the contrary these armorial bearings commemorate the marriage of James Du Pré (born 10th June 1778 died 13th June 1870) and Madelina Maxwell (born after 1776 died ……?). James was the only son of Josias Du Pré, of Wilton Park, near Beaconsfield in the County of Buckinghamshire and his wife, Rebecca Alexander, whilst Madelina was the second daughter of Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, Baronet in the County of Wigtownshire and his wife, Katharine Blair. James and Madelina were married at the Parish Church of St George, Hanover Square, Westminster in the County of Middlesex on the 18th May 1801. James served as both a Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for the County of Buckinghamshire and was appointed the county’s High Sheriff for the year 1825.
