Footnote
Note: During the 19th century Edinburgh lead the world in the study and practice of medicine and surgery. It is therefore not surprising that the upper class worlds of the silversmith and doctor/ surgeon met in creating fine instruments. Indeed, even from the times of the ancient Greeks, the purifying and antibacterial properties of silver were known and its use in treatments considered a great benefit.
