Footnote
Note: Mak' Merry Pottery grew out of the Scottish Women's Rural Institute, which was founded at Longniddry in 1917 by Catherine Blair. 'Mak' Merry' was the name given to the co-operative trading organisation of the institute. Blair believed that making pottery was a way for women to have independence and the institute gave them a way of expressing themselves artistically, as well as making money in a rural economy.
