Description
by William Robertson, Edinburgh 1794-1795, the deep circular outlined bowl with raised flared rim with domed pull off cover, the cover and bowl engraved with coat of arms and presentation inscription, with reeded borders, twin lion mask and ring handles and hexagonal section spout with turned fruit wood handle, raised on four slender scrolled supports with chamfered edges, on square base with canted corners and concave sides, the centre with vase shaped burner, the whole raised on four ball feet

Note: The body engraved with the arms of Simpson and presentation inscription reading:
'Part of Silver Plate value One Hundred Guineas Voted to William Simpson Esq in Augt 1794 by the Paper Manufacturers near Edinr'
It is believed that this generous gift of plate was presented to William Simpson by his peers for his invention and innovation of a new process and machinery in the rolling and manufacture of paper which made the process quicker and easier.
