Footnote
Figures on the seashore, gathering mussels, clams, or seaweed, or children playing on the rocks, were favourite subjects for John Maclauchlan Milne’s early watercolours. Dated examples are known from the period 1911 to 1920. From 1908, when he returned to Scotland from London, until January 1917, when he joined the Royal Flying Corps, Maclauchlan Milne was living in Dundee and many of his paintings are from the coast of Fife – such as at Boarhills, near St Andrews – and the coast of Angus near Montrose. He seems to have dropped his first initial ‘J’ from his signature in about 1915, so an estimated date for the present work could be 1915/16 or 1919/20. He returned to Dundee from military service in Northern France and Belgium in June 1919.
