Footnote
In her memoir Willa Muir remembered her time living in St Tropez in 1926/27:
‘More and more St Tropez was filling up with artists from every quarter, including some from Scotland....’
Muir does not mention John Maclauchlan Milne by name, but St Tropez was one of his favourite locations on the Côte d’Azur and the harbour featured in several of his paintings. His first visit was in 1924, but there are dated paintings from 1926 and 1928 and others undated like this one. In the 1920s, Milne showed several paintings of St Tropez at the exhibitions of the Society of Scottish Artists (1925 to 1928) and the Royal Scottish Academy (1926) in Edinburgh. Maclauchlan Milne has contributed to the colourist tradition and this is a fine example of his developing skills at that time.
We are grateful to Maurice Millar, author of The Missing Colourist: The Search for John Maclauchlan Milne RSA (available via www.themissingcolourist.co.uk ), for his cataloguing of this work.
