In his monograph about the artist, Patrick Bourne wrote about this painting: ‘Cap d’Ail c.1934 is one of the few oil paintings known to have been executed in the Cap Ferrat years. The flattened impasto applied with a palette knife, the revealed soft pencil underdrawing and the pale colouring all conspire to give the effect of a work done in pastel. In her choice of subject - the village against the hill - and in her obvious interest in the abstract pattern made by the road zig-zagging up to the village, the picture is … reminiscent of [Charles Rennie] Mackintosh.' (op.cit., pp.23 & 26)
