Footnote
William Gear was born in Methil, Fife, yet his artistic influence extended far beyond Scotland. He was among the first British artists to fully embrace European abstraction after the Second World War. At a time when many British painters continued to focus on figurative and landscape traditions, Gear looked to bold, non-representational compositions characterised by vivid colours, organic forms and strong structural design. This is evident in the present painting, where the composition is made up of different abstract shapes and colours.
