Footnote
Sailing ships by a dock was a favourite subject of Joseph Milne's pictures. Most of these were focused on east coast harbours from the Tyne to the Tay, but this painting from the Clyde is one of several from the west.
Milne's dated paintings of boats and ships range from fishing boats at Buckhaven in 1880, at the beginning of his career; ships at Tayport in 1891, at Gateshead in 1897 and other dated harbour pictures which have lost their original titles. Other similar, undated works range from harbours at Leith and Perth, barges on the Thames and boats at Tarbet, Loch Fyne.
Although the present work is not dated, other Milne paintings from the Clyde include The Busy Clyde, which was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1899 (no. 91).
