This work formerly belonged to Robert (Robin) Edward Hutchison (1922-2013), the son of William Oliphant Hutchison, the grandson of Edward Arthur Walton, the nephew of Cecile Walton and the great-nephew of Joseph Crawhall. He was Keeper of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery from 1953 until 1982.
Note: It is thought that this work does not depict Arbroath harbour as titled in the catalogue and so may not have been created whilst Eardley was a student at Hospitalfield College of Art.
