Note: Despite initial doubts, Scottish Colourist Samuel John Peploe, discovered much to paint and inspire in Perthshire, becoming particularly enamoured with the pictorial possibilities of the charming winding road paths dotted with trees.
In Perthshire Landscape, Peploe's admiration for Cezanne shines through. The road curves round, drawing our attention deeper into the landscape beyond the picture plane, while the flanking row of trees allows Peploe to explore the patterning of light and shade created by the branches, and the marked contrast between the dense, solid tree trunks and the softly moving branches and leaves. As we peer through the gaps in the trees, to the layered landscape beyond, we are aware of the remarkable sense of depth and volume that Peploe has skilfully generated.
At this point in his career, Peploe was working in a more expressive way, and his broader, freer brushstrokes add a vivacity to the calm scene. We can imagine ourselves enjoying the beauty of a hot summer's day in Scotland, as we observe the heat and light so beautifully and artistically captured by a Scottish Colourist playing to his strengths.
