Footnote
On the 2nd of September 1929 McBey painted the quiet quay at Pittenweem. The following day he moved two miles south to paint the lively fishing village at St. Monance. Both depictions of the picturesque harbour towns are offered here, having remained in a family collection for three generations.
The 1920s had seen a peak in McBey's popularity as an etcher but by 1929 he increased his work in oil paints. The technical skill demonstrated in both paint and printing is especially remarkable given that McBey was self-taught.
