Born in Staffordshire in 1926, William Bowyer's artistic education began with evening classes, his days being occupied by his work as a coal miner. Bowyer soon flourished at the Royal College of Art, however, where tutors Carel Weight and Ruskin Spears recognised the enormous potential of his work. Influenced by the great tradition of British landscape
painting and the legacy of Turner and Constable, Bowyer delights in contemplating the vagaries of light on the river Thames around his home in Chiswick. The father of artists Jason and Francis Bowyer, he also taught Peter Blake, and was a key figure in the New English Art Club. His work is included in the National Portrait Gallery, the Arts Council collection, and H.R.H. the Prince of Wales Collection.
