Born in London in 1930, Frederick Cuming trained at the Sidcup School of Art and the Royal College of Art, becoming a Royal Academician in 1974. While also a master of interior scenes, Cuming is best known for his landscapes, which explore the mercurial effect of light on water and evince the profound influence of Turner. Now often studying the coast near his home in Rye, his love of landscape was first developed when as a child he was evacuated to the countryside during the blitz, the stark visual and atmospheric contrast with the capital's streets leaving a potent sensory impression on him. In 2001 he was the featured artist in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, with an entire gallery devoted to his work.
