Footnote
Note: Tobin's book contains two letters written on mourning paper, from the author to Mrs Howard of Corby Castle. The first letter, marked in pencil as being dated 1860, offers the author's regards for Mrs Howard's health. Tobin also gives a remarkably equanimous account of her 21-year-old son's death and mentions the family's next planned trip to Egypt and Syria. The second letter, dated 1861, offers a copy of Shadows of the East to Mrs Howard.
