Footnote
Note: Donald Mennie was born in Scotland in 1875/6 and grew up in Golspie, Sutherlandshire, before emigrating to China in around 1899. Although his photographs tend to show a very romanticised vision of China, The Grandeur of the Gorges depicts scenes along the Yangtze River which led to Mennie being proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society. Mennie died in the early 1940s and his name is found listed in the records of British internees at Lunghwa internment camp, Shanghai.
