Note: Photographs brought back by James Strachan of Newbyth, Haddingtonshire. Strachan was an engineer, and was employed by Messrs. Mirrlees, Watson & Co. of Glasgow, in the design of pumping engines and of appliances used in sugar factories. In 1890 Strachan was appointed manager of an engineering works at Pernambuco, Brazil, where he remained about a year.
