Fragments of Ancient Poetry, collected in the Highlands of Scotland and Translated from the Galic or Erse Language. Edinburgh: G. Hamilton and J. Balfour, 1760, first edition, small 8vo in fours, cut close at head affecting some page numerals only, [bound with] Warton, Thomas, editor. The Union or Select Scots and English Poems. Edinburgh: A. Monro & D. Murray [but Oxford, for Baldwin of London], 1753, first edition, first issue, small 8vo, with reading "Centle" on first page of Contents, title slightly browned at corners, a few minor tears without loss, contemporary half calf, rubbed, joints cracked

Note: This was the first of the "Ossianic" creations; it was the acceptance of these fragments as genuine remains of ancient epics that led Macpherson to compose Fingal and Temora.
