The New Theatre at Covent Garden was opened on 7 December 1732 and offered Handel two opera nights a week. The 1734-35 season, saw a revival of Il pastor fido in a new version and the first London performance of Athalia. Araxerxes, a pasticcio using some of Hasse's settings, was put on by the Nobility Opera at the King's Theatre on 29 October 1734 with the greatest castrato of the age Farinelli.
