Footnote
Note: Falling between the genres of Victorian sporting artists and 20th century wildlife painters, Thorburn has been called, "...one of the most sought-after and highly priced bird artists..." - he painted his subjects outside in their natural surroundings, creating realistic images, "...indicative of the struggle for survival." Christine Jackson writes that the work is, "...a rare collectors' item,' as, "very few of these plates , not used in his other publications, have survived." [Christine Jackson, Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World, 1999, p.463]
