Note: Having begun its life on 9th February 1739, The Scots Magazine is still being published today, although there have been gaps in its history and it has gone through a variety of forms. The initial publication was a 48 page monthly pamphlet priced at sixpence. Although the run for sale run has several volumes not present, it still contains important information and opinions on subjects including: the lead-up to the Jacobite Rebellion - His Majesty having received undoubted intelligence, that the eldest son of the pretender to his crown is arrived in France, and that preparations are making there to invade this kingdom -; the first silver club golf competition to be played on Leith Links in 1744 - On application of several persons of honour, skilled in the ancient and healthful exercise of the goff [golf], an act of the town-council of Edinburgh was passed on the 7th of March, approving their Treasurer to cause make a silver club, of 15l. value, to be played for on the links the first Monday of April annually.. .; and, in 1775: A friendly address to all reasonable Americans, on the subject of our political confusions… The same address later terms the revolutionaries as: ...these rebellious republicans, these hairbrained fanatics… Other subjects are also discussed, such as the Battle of Waterloo and the proposal that a female parliament should be installed to shame men into improving government.
