Rare Books, Maps & Manuscripts
Auction: Rare Books, Maps & Manuscripts
Description
The wanderings of Oisin and other poems. London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1889. First edition, 8vo., original dark blue cloth, uncut and with the first 56 pages unopened, very slight wear at extremities, slight internal cracking.
Footnote
Provenance: This copy has loosely inserted a small card with the inscription "From André Raffalovich, 9 Whitehouse Terrace", the friend of Wilde and John Gray. An annotated cutting by Ritchie records the presence of the Raffalovich card and also that this copy was purchased by him at Mallam's Oxford and that it came from the library of James Strachey, presumably Lytton's borther, assistant editor of the Spectator and member of the Bloomsbury Group.
Note: Wade 2. Yeats's second publication and first substantial book. Binding in the presumed first state i.e. "Kegan Paul Trench & Co" at foot of spine. 500 copies were printed of which a large number were sold as subscription copies to friends and connections.
