Footnote
Note: Loosely inserted in Scoop is the signature of Baron Deeds (Bill Deeds), who, according to many sources, if not Deeds himself, was the journalist used by Waugh as the model and inspiration for the hapless William Boot his protagonist in the novel. While Deeds has always denied his association with Scoop's boot, he, nevertheless, in At war with Waugh acknowledges some similarities.
