Description
The general contents of the British Museum, with remarks. Serving as a directory in viewing that noble cabinet. London: R. & J. Dodsley, 1762. Second edition, 8vo, half-title, contemporary calf, rebacked, slightly rubbed, several annotations in a contemporary hand
Footnote
Provenance: Viscount Strathallan, Stobhall, Perthshire
Note: A scarce work, issued first in 1761, only two years after the Museum was first opened to the public. Dodsley draws attention to the appallingly cumbersome process of obtaining an admission ticket, which was to lead, by 1782, to a four-month delay in dealing with applications.
