Valverde's anatomical atlas was first published in Spanish in 1556. It was widely used, reprinted and translated though "nearly all the plates are copied from Vesalius and the text is plagiarised from the Fabrica" (Osler 576).
For his first Latin edition of 1566, Plantin hired the Dutch artists Pieter and Franz Huys to re-engrave the earlier plates. As in the NLM copy, the title-page of this edition is dated 1572 while the colophon indicates 1579.
