[Edinburgh: Edmonston & Douglas, 1868.] First English edition, comprising pp.225-352 only of the proof copy, and the 4pp. preface, heavily corrected and annotated by Dekker and others (as referenced in an attached letter), with several autograph letters: ALS from Baron Alphonse Nahuijs to the publishers of the work, dated The Hague October 25th 1867, responding to their request for him to translate the book: "If you will make me a good offer, I will bind myself to give you not only a good translation, but an excellent one - genuine English..."; and another letter from Nahuijs discussing Dekker and the translation of the work; ALS from Eduard Douwes Dekker to the publishers, dated Cologne 30th January 1868, writing about his health, the English publication of Max Havelaar and his time in Java; another ALS from Dekker referring to his corrections to the text; ALS from Dekker, 10pp., explaining further corrections to the text; and a final ALS from Nahuijs, discussing his preface to the English translation; bound in 19th century burgundy cloth, some slight dampstaining to the covers and very lightly to a few lower margins
